Texas License To Carry (LTC) – What Is It
May 4, 2023 8:35 pmThe Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) issues the Texas License to Carry (LTC) . The holder can carry a handgun concealed or openly on or about their person.
To be eligible for an LTC, applicants must be at least 18 years of age, be a resident of Texas for at least six months, and not have been convicted of a felony or certain other disqualifying offenses. Applicants must also complete a training course that meets the requirements of the DPS.
The LTC is a valuable tool for law-abiding Texans who want to exercise their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. After getting the LTC you can carry a handgun for self-defense in a variety of settings, including some areas of schools, churches, and government buildings.
The LTC provides holders with peace of mind knowing that they are legally allowed to carry a handgun for self-defense. If you are involved in a self-defense shooting, the LTC can help protect the holder from criminal charges.

Keep these things in mind about the Texas LTC:
- You do not need an LTC to own or possess a handgun.
- The LTC does not allow holders to carry a handgun into certain places, such as on the premises of schools, courthouses, and federal buildings.
- The LTC does not provide immunity from criminal prosecution.
- The LTC is a privilege, not a right. The DPS can revoke the LTC for good cause, such as a felony conviction or a violation of the law.
