Responsible Hunting in Texas

Elevating the Hunting Experience in Texas

The thrill of the hunt, the stillness of a morning in the Texas woods, and the satisfaction of harvesting your own food — these are experiences only hunters truly understand. But in 2025, being a hunter in Texas comes with a higher calling: responsibility.

At In Focus Training, we believe that your time in the field should reflect discipline, legality, and above all, safety. This blog is your invitation to move beyond “just getting out there” and embrace next-level responsible hunting. We’ll cover everything from the updated deer season dates, to what gear to bring, and how marksmanship training will make you a more ethical, confident hunter.

And if you’re a Texas License to Carry (LTC) holder, there’s even more reason to read on — because carrying responsibly during hunting season comes with some unique nuances you need to understand.

Mark the Dates on Your Calendar 📅

If you’re planning to hunt whitetail deer this year in Texas, you need to know when and where it’s legal. Here are the 2025–2026 season dates for white-tailed deer according to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD):

🏹 Archery Season:

  • September 28 – November 1, 2025

🦌 General Season (Rifle):

  • November 2, 2025 – January 5, 2026

🧒 Youth Season:

  • October 26–27, 2025 and January 6–19, 2026

Don’t wait until the last minute. Scope out your location, apply for public land permits early if needed, and make sure your gear — and your skills — are field-ready.

Respecting Firearm Laws While in the Field

Respecting Firearm Laws While in the Field

Texas law allows for permitless carry in many contexts, but carrying a handgun while hunting still comes with rules. For example:

  • It’s legal to carry a handgun for personal protection while hunting — regardless of your method (bow or rifle).
  • However, the handgun may not be used to take game during archery-only season.
  • For LTC holders, carrying concealed or openly while hunting is allowed, but must still comply with game laws and landowner regulations.
  • Always check if the land you’re on has any specific prohibitions or conditions.

Remember, even seasoned hunters get caught slipping on technicalities. Don’t be that guy. Brush up on Texas hunting firearm laws and game code before you head out.

Gear Up: Essential Equipment Checklist

Responsible hunting means having the right tools — not just for success, but for safety and ethical harvesting. Here’s a basic gear list to get you started:

🎯 Hunting Gear:

  • Firearm or Bow (based on season)
  • Quality Optics – Scopes, binoculars
  • Field Dressing Kit – Knife, gloves, game bags
  • Game Calls or Scent Lures – Depending on game strategy

🧢 Apparel:

  • Blaze Orange (for rifle season)
  • Layered Camouflage
  • Boots with Ankle Support
  • Bug Spray & Thermacell Device – Don’t sleep on mosquito defense in Texas.

🧰 Support Gear:

  • First Aid Kit
  • Flashlight or Headlamp
  • GPS or Compass
  • Range Finder

If you’re new to the field, don’t get overwhelmed. Start with the basics, rent what you can, and invest slowly. But don’t skimp on safety gear.

Why Marksmanship Training Matters

Whether you’re archery-focused or shooting from 100 yards, marksmanship isn’t optional — it’s your responsibility. Wounding a deer and not recovering it isn’t just poor sportsmanship — it’s irresponsible and unethical.

Take a Class:

Our Marksmanship Practice Courses at In Focus Training offer:

  • Safe firearm handling
  • Breathing and stance techniques
  • Precision shooting drills
  • Judgment training under pressure

If you carry an LTC, our courses also address quick-access drills and retention techniques — giving you a full-circle understanding of carry dynamics in the field.

Beyond the Kill: Hunting Ethics 101

Real hunters know the job isn’t done after the shot. Ethics guide every step:

  • Know your zone limits and bag limits
  • Practice clean shots and proper recovery
  • Take time to field dress and cool meat quickly
  • Leave no trace in nature

We’re not just here to help you be legal. We want you to be the kind of hunter others respect.

For LTC Holders: A Special Invitation

If you’re a Texas License to Carry (LTC) holder, hunting season is a perfect time to revisit your carry training. Let’s be honest — if your LTC class was over a year ago, your retention and readiness could probably use a refresh.

We invite you to:

  • Brush up on permitless carry laws as they relate to public land, vehicles, and storage
  • Practice in realistic outdoor environments
  • Join our online or in-person training to stay sharp, compliant, and capable

Final Thoughts: Train Hard. Hunt Smart.

Texas offers some of the most beautiful, diverse hunting opportunities in the country. But whether it’s your first season or your 30th, you owe it to yourself and to the game you pursue to be prepared.
